Automatic Litter Boxes can Risk your Cat’s Health
Continuing on my “All About Litter Boxes” series… we HAVE to talk about Automatic Cat Litter Boxes and the reasons why these boxes can actually be a risk to your cats health!
The reason I say this is because cats are famous for hiding illness, and often do not show obvious signs until something is VERY wrong. Therefore, one of the BEST ways a cat-parent can be aware of your cat’s health is by monitoring urine for bladder/kidney health, and stool for bowel health.
However, the ability to monitor your cat’s bowel, bladder, and kidney health is lost when using an automatic litter box because the box is either removing all of the waste into one main compartment which is often only checked to dump out once per week, or worse, it is immediately flushed away during the cleaning cycle.
These boxes are made by humans for the sake of humans, they certainly do not resemble what is best for our cat’s health and needs. If you DO own an automatic litter box and refuse to turn back, at least be sure you are taking the time to check your cats waste every day for signs of problems… remember something like a urinary blockage in a cat can become deadly in less than 24 hours!
Here is a list of just some of the conditions which can be detected by closely monitoring our cat’s urinary and bowel waste:
1. Diabetes Incipidus
2. Diabetes Mellitus
3. Urinary Tract Infection
4. Urinary Crystals
5. Urinary Blockage
8. Parasitic Infection
9. Bacteria Infection
10. Foreign Object Ingestion
STAY TUNED... next week I discuss the second HUGE reason why I do not recommend an automatic cat litter box, and give solutions to help prevent this if you DO already have an automatic litter box for your cats
