Natures Variety Canned Cat Food

Best Canned Cat Foods

Important Updates:  I will continue to post updates as needed to the blog here to alert of any new/changed information on the canned food diets outlines in the blog article.

***Tiki Cat brand has now release a 6 OZ can which you can purchase on Chewy.com which greatly reduces the high cost of the food as cans purchased in the size now average $1.78 per 6 oz can!

Although I personally feed and promote a strict raw food diet to my dog and cats, I have seen a need and been asked many, many, times over to recommend what are the Best Canned Cat Foods.  I understand for many people a raw food diet is still too scary and unknown, or simply too gross to them to be able to feed.  Also I do recommend that a canned food diet should be fed in certain circumstances when an animal is sick or immunocompromised, and sometimes canned food diets are needed within the cattery setting or when raw is difficult or unavailable to feed during travel.

Being there are so many cat food companies and formulations on this over-flowing pet food market today it was hard to determine exactly which ones are the best canned cat foods.  I choose the foods based on a few different factors, being high quality ingredients, well known in the current market, affordable and available to the general public all through-out the US.   Once I had narrowed down which would be on my list of top recommended foods I then emailed each company directly to be sure that I wasn’t basing my information and research off false information or hearsay.

My decision on how to choose the order of the best canned cat foods was again dependent on factors such as, quality, formula, availability and affordability but also the informed determination of safety of the product based on company ownership and manufacturing facilities.   As you will see even the best of the list here is still not perfect, there really is no such thing as a perfect canned food diet because feeding a cat processed canned meat is not an ideal diet, but these are the champions of the canned cat food world.

Below the list of best canned cat foods you will find that I have also posted my emailed questions as well as the responses I received from each Company on our list.  The simply manner of the responses and direct or indirect manner of answering questions gave me a lot of additional insight into the quality, and trust of the company and products.  Even though I have no way of proving or disproving their claims of product sourcing and quality I believe you can easily read through the lines and see which companies are trying to sugar-coat things and which are being truly open and factual.  However I did simply transfer the information reported in their statements into the list without personal judgment or opinion; I leave that up to each of you.

Natures Variety

“Hi April,

Thank you for writing!

Nature’s Variety is owned by a private equity firm, Catterton Partners. Our headquarters is in St. Louis, Missouri.

Our products are all manufactured in the U.S. – kibble in Kansas through CJ Foods, cans in Kansas through Simmons, and our Instinct Raw line is manufactured in our own facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. Our manufacturing facility is a USDA Certified Organic Processing Facility and adheres to USDA and EU standards. The facilities used to process our foods comply with all state and federal regulations.  All Nature’s Variety diets are continually produced to our specifications.

All of our poultry, pork, bison, and beef come from the U.S., our lamb and venison are imported from Australia and New Zealand, and our rabbit is sourced from France.  Our vegetables and fruits are from the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, depending on the ingredients.  Our grains and starches are sourced from the U.S., Canada, and Brazil – herbs and spices from North America, Europe, and the Middle East.  Our vitamins and minerals are from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.  Ox Bile sourced from New Zealand is a natural source of taurine needed in our Instinct Raw for cats to make it complete and balanced diet. We source most of our ingredients from the U.S. and turn to other locations only as needed.  We are very stringent on our sourcing and have good relationships built with our vendors for quality ingredients.

Our poultry, bison, lamb, venison, rabbit, and pork are antibiotic-free with no added growth hormones.  Due to the small number of cattle raised without antibiotics and hormones, it is not possible for Nature’s Variety to guarantee that the cattle have never been administered these drugs.  However, all cattle must go through a required “withdrawal” period and are tested for residues prior to slaughter.

The protein in our Instinct Canned Chicken Formula is 11% on an as fed basis.

At this time, based on available sourcing, we are unable to guarantee that all of our ingredients are GMO-free.  However, our Instinct Raw Frozen Organic Chicken for dogs is one of our diets that we can guarantee is completely GMO-free.

Our 5.5 oz. and 3 oz. cans are BPA-free.”

Kim

Weruva/Soulistic

Sun, Aug 9, 2015 at 1:13 PM

“Hello April,

Thank you for the email to Weruva, BFF, Soulistic, Cats in the Kitchen and Truluxe! Apologies on the late response as I was away all last week on vacation. Below are answers to your inquiries. Much of this information is on our website as well as additional information. After reviewing, please let us know if you have further questions or comments.

Best Regards,

“1.        Who is/are the company owners, and where are they based?

*** My wife and I (David & Stacie Forman are co-founders and owners). We live in Florida, and our company is based in Massachusetts.

  1. What is the name of the facility/facilities where your products manufactured?  Also the location(s)?

*** We provide a good amount of information that offers great transparency. There are, however, certain things we do not disclose. And though we would like to openly discuss our manufacturing partner’s identity, we must balance it against the need to protect our business in the long term. By way of example, let’s assume larger BRAND X wanted to leave their current place of manufacture or find additional sourcing, it is very possible that they would make a decision to “produce where Weruva produces”. As a small family run company, we cannot compete financially with larger entities. If larger companies drained production lines, small brands like ours may eventually get squeezed out entirely. Something similar happened very recently in the US where, based upon information we were provided, several smaller brands can no longer produce at a certain place due to one or two larger entities demanding exclusivity to the production lines.

Though we absolutely understand why this decision will be unpopular for many, we must balance this request with a totality of factors. Hopefully, one day we can build to a level of exclusivity where it will provide no issue to disclose. At the same time, hopefully many customers will understand our decision. By keeping this information proprietary, it betters our chance of growth which in turn allows us to continue to bring innovative and exciting products to the market. A competition for production line time means less opportunity for growth and innovation, and hopefully many customers can see the value.

  1. What Certifications do the manufacturing facilities hold?

*** The facility produces food for people as well as pets internationally. As such, the facility must meet the rigorous standards of many strict countries. Arguably, the strictest standard in the world is the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The facility has earned an “A” grade year after year. The factory also has certificates of accreditation by the International Organization For Standardization (ISO), HALAL and Orthodox Kosher. Additionally, under similar guidelines, several third party inspectors, including the leading provider of human food safety services, Cook and Thurber, examine the plant regularly throughout the year. And the factory, which is FDA approved and USDA registered, performs an internal audit every two months. The inspections cover everything from top to bottom, including examinations of pest control, food safety and heavy metal and histamine testing procedures. The audits also ensure environmental control, including such detailed assurances that all work stations are cleaned every four hours and that each employee’s hygiene meets the requisite standards.

  1. Where are your products sourced from?  Main ingredients as well as the supplements please?  Is your Vitamin C and Taurine sourced from China?

*** Our food is produced in Thailand. The fish is caught in international waters, the chicken is raised in Thailand cage-free and consumes a non-GMO diet. Similar to the USDA, there is a branch called the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) that certifies chicken production. As much of the chicken is exported for human consumption, the standards are at global standards. Beef and lamb are from Australia/New Zealand and are grass fed, and turkey is from the US. Most of the vitamins and minerals come from Europe and non-China Asia. The taurine, based upon availability, is from China.

  1. Are your meats hormone and antibiotic free?

*** Yes

  1. Can you please tell me what is the “as fed” % of protein for your canned chicken formula cat food.

*** Links to the various formulas can be found here. As fed is in the ~10-11% range for most chicken formulas

Weruva – http://weruva.com/weruva-cat-cuisine-nutrition.php

  1. Are your products certified GMO free?

*** We have received certifications from all suppliers confirming non-GMO of the supply. However, our products are not “certified” as GMO free.

  1. Are any of your cans BPA free?

*** The pouches are certified BPA free, and the inner lining of the 3.0oz cans and 5.5oz cans are BPA free”

Best Canned Cat Foods

Merrick

Response By Email (Twyla Waddell) (08/04/2015 11:09 AM)

“Hello April,

Thank you for your questions.  Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.  Have a wonderful day!

Who is/are the company owners, and where are they based?

Back in 2012 we announced that Merrick has grown nearly 500% in five years.  To support further continued growth and success, the company was recently re-capitalized. The new investment will facilitate more aggressive marketing, new product launches, and a focused promotional program. The Company remains dedicated to manufacturing only the highest quality treats, canned and dry food as we support continued growth.

What recapitalization means, is that founder Garth Merrick recently partnered with Swander Pace, a consumer product focused investment firm. Garth still maintains a strong, minority stake in the Company and, along with Tyler Merrick, sits on the Board of Directors.   The Merrick’s remain committed to the direction of the Company and to the principals of quality, integrity and innovation that have fueled Merrick Pet Care’s growth for the past twenty years.

We have since, entered into a purchase agreement with Nestle-Purina, which will be closing in the next few months.  We will remain to own and operate our own facility.

2.      What is the name of the facility/facilities where your products manufactured?  Also the location(s)?

Merrick Pet Care- Hereford, Texas

3.      What Certifications do the manufacturing facilities hold?

We have earned the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Level 3 certification for our

195,000 square foot facilities located in Hereford, Texas.

The SQF Level 3 certification means Merrick has successfully completed a stringent food safety auditing

process and verifies that their facilities are in compliance with Certified HACCP (Hazard Analysis, Critical Control Points) food safety plans and quality management systems.

4.      Where are your products sourced from?  Main ingredients as well as the supplements please?  Is your Vitamin C and Taurine sourced from China?

All Merrick products are China free.

We source the best quality ingredients from the best producers. Most of our ingredients come from the USA. However, there are times when we can only get certain ingredients from other countries such as Japan, Canada or Germany.

5.      Are your meats hormone and antibiotic free?

We do not specifically use hormone-free or antibiotic free products

6.      Can you please tell me what is the “as fed” % of protein for your canned chicken formula catfood.  The Chicken A La King protein is 11.10% as fed

7.      Are your products certified GMO free?

When we formulated our new recipes, we made the decision to choose fruits, vegetables and whole grains that are GMO-free.  While we only use USDA-inspected protein options in our dog food and treats, we cannot guarantee that the diets of all the animals that provide our protein sources are GMO-free.

8.      Are any of your cans BPA free?

Our 3 oz and 5.5 oz cans are not made with BPA lining. “

Fromm

8/5/15 at 10:12am:

“April,

Thank you for your email and interest in Fromm Family Foods.

I will be happy to answer your questions and provide some relevant additional information as well.

*Fromm is a family-owned-and-operated business founded in 1904 and has been making premium pet foods since 1949. Owner Tom Nieman is fourth generation and his sons Bryan and Dan now work side by side with him and are very involved in all aspects of the business. For more than four generations we as a company have worked hard to create exceptional products using quality ingredients, meticulous preparation and standards with a diligent and dedicated staff.

*Our commitment to quality and safety starts from sourcing. We have long standing relationships with our suppliers and work diligently to find the highest quality ingredients possible. All of our ingredients are sourced in North America to ensure all ingredients pass EU, FDA and USDA inspection. Because quality is key to us, should an ingredient come from overseas, the ingredients must come with a health certificate and be EU certified and pass all certifications. While certain ingredients including various vitamins simply cannot be found in the US and do come from overseas, we use no ingredients from China. We have long-standing and trusted relationships with most of our suppliers. Many of these partners have worked with us for years and through these long-standing relationship and our own quality standards we are able to ensure that our ingredients are of high quality and safe.  Fromm products do not contain hormones or antibiotics. We purchase meats exclusively from suppliers who receive product from producers who have an agreement with the USDA to produce animals without the use of hormones or antibiotics. Additionally, our products do not contain any artificial preservatives. Fromm buys and uses only natural preservatives. In fact, Fromm was one of the first companies chosen to research the effectiveness of mixed tocopherols in preserving high-quality pet foods. This and on-going research verifies that mixed tocopherols can effectively preserve the freshness of the food for an extended period of time, especially when food is stored and handled properly. Fromm ingredients are never preserved with ethoxyquin, BHT, BHA, or any other synthetic preservative.  Our foods are made fresh each and every day in one of our two manufacturing facilities in Wisconsin–Mequon & Columbus, WI. We have a proactive approach to cleanliness and safety and also lab test each batch of food that we make. Our foods are tested on site in our on-site quality assurance lab and also tested and approved by an outside accredited lab before they are cleared for dispatch from our warehouse.

*I wanted to expand on the testing & safety procedures mentioned above. Our safety practices that have been proven to be infallible, yet we know we cannot afford to rest easy and therefore remain diligent with every step in the making of our recipes.  Each ingredient arriving at our facility is first tested for quality and safety, once inspection is complete we will use it to create the recipe. The final recipe batch is then tested both in an independent laboratory and our own lab here at our facility.  This testing is very extensive and is called a PCT test in which it would indicate any problem and includes (to name a few) any bacteria, contaminates, or pathogenic bacteria that could be problematic. If any test would show a failure, the batch would be held and destroyed.  After all tests have cleared that point, deeming it 100% safe, we will then release it to the Fromm distributor for sales to the independent retailer so you can buy the highest quality and safest food for your pet.  While these three procedures may seem redundant to some, we believe it is one reason we have remained without a recall, ever, in our 65+ year history and continue to have the outstanding integrity in our recipes.

*A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a bacteria, yeast, insect, plant, fish, or mammal whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Fromm Four Star Nutritionals and Fromm Gold dog and cat products do not contain any genetically modified organisms.  Fromm Classic dog food contains beet pulp. Seventy percent of the beet crop in the US is genetically modified. Therefore we assume the beet pulp in Classic is genetically modified. All Fromm products (Four Star, Gold and Classic) are subject to our rigorous food safety program relating to ingredients and production standards. This includes adhering to Fromm’s Approved Supplier Program. The Approved Supplier Program insures all inbound ingredients meet our specifications.  There is only the Four-Star and Gold line available for cats.
*Our current cans still contain trace amounts of BPA and we are currently working with our canned food manufacturer to remedy this. BPA is a compound that is present as part of the epoxy-resin base used in non-aluminum metal cans. While it has been used for more than 50 years in metal cans, recent research has heightened public concerns about the safety of its use. Many scientific studies are currently being performed to better understand this concern. We have never detected BPA in any of our foods stored in our cans.

*The Duck & Chicken Pate recipe can be viewed here, click the TECHNICAL ANALYSIS tab towards the bottom of the page and this will give you the complete nutritional profile including the as-fed % of protein. http://frommfamily.com/products/four-star/cat/can/#duck-and-chicken-pate

I would encourage you to visit our Facebook page to read the testimonials and stories of some of our customers. Hopefully you will see how passionate our customers are about our brand and how hard we work to help each and every customer find the best fit for their dog or cat. If you should have any additional questions please let me know. “

Wild Calling

Jeremy J. Petersen (Wild Calling Pet Foods)

Aug 3, 11:46

“Hi April,

  1. Our company is majority owned by Tim Petersen & his family.
  2. Our dry foods are made at Day Six Pet Nutrition in Baxter Springs, KS.

As of March 9, 2015, all our canned varieties except rabbit and buffalo are produced by Simmons Pet Foods in Emporia, KS. Rabbit and buffalo are still packed at Evanger’s but we continue to work diligently to have them produced at Simmons.

Previously, all our canned product were manufactured by both American Nutrition and Evanger’s. As we are aware, there has been a lot of negativity surrounding Evanger’s. Unfortunately with only 5 canneries in the US and only two willing to produce product for young startup companies like us, we were limited in choices when we first started the company. I can assure you we have very strict manufacturing guidelines and random testing in place with all our copack partners. Furthermore, we use one of the industries top nutritionist to help build all our products. Never have we found any issues with the product produced at Evanger’s and it is actually favored among consumers between product produced at ANI v Evangers. Evanger’s has been cleared of any wrongdoing surrounding the product they produce by the FDA. It is very unfortunate they have legal issues surrounding what appears to be a lack of judgement and personal deficiency but this in no way impacts the quality of product they produce. Now, more than ever they are concerned about producing a quality product that abides by all applicable laws. We would not have partnered with them if they didn’t agree to abide by our strict standards. They produce product for several of the industries canned foods including Weruva, Party Animal and Addiction to name a few. We are very excited they are moving into a new state of the art facility as well which they are hoping will be Leeds certified.

I know there are websites where the content creator has a certain viewpoint or agenda they want to promote. I would hope you would reach out to the manufacturer as you have done to get correct information from the source. Thank you for doing this. We are a company committed to open transparency and will gladly share any more information you would like clarified. If you would like to discuss more in-depth please don’t hesitate to call me at my number below.

  1. Our manufacturing facilities hold all applicable and necessary FDA, USDA and government regulation to produce pet food.
  2. The majority of our kibble ingredients are sourced in the United States. We try to source everything that we can in the US for these diets, however there are some ingredients that are of higher quality from other countries so we do source certain ingredients from New Zealand and Canada. (NZ=Elk, Lamb meal, green lipped mussel – Canada =Duck). We DO NOT source ingredients from China.

All ingredients in our canned recipes are sourced in the United States.

I hope this helps, please don’t hesitate to contact us with any additional questions.

  1. Our meat, poultry and fish abides by all USDA guidelines established for meat, poultry and fish and is hormone and antibiotic free.

Our suppliers cannot always guarantee the meat is range free, wild caught, grass fed, etc. We make every effort possible to source from the highest quality ingredient companies and have strict quality standards in place for ingredient handling. To us free-range, grass-fed etc. have become mere marketing games. The reality is, pet food companies source ingredients from the same suppliers of which there is not always enough supply to fulfill the demand for free-range or grass-fed beef or chicken for the pet food industry since humans demand these cuts for themselves.

At Wild Calling, we are committed to balanced, optimal nutrition; something we like to call the Art of Nutrition. As such, we prefer to have the right mix of protein, carbs, fat and vitamins and minerals to provide your pet with the best nutrition possible.

  1. Please visit this link to view the guaranteed & typical analysis for our cat foods.

Please note: We advise that you consult with your vet to verify this information is correct & to assess whether or not our foods are appropriate for your pet as we cannot provide specific medical veterinary advice per FDA & government regulations.

  1. No they are not certified GMO free by any organization for a few reasons.
  2. Our 5.5 oz cat cans are BPA free. Currently, there is not a manufacturer of 13 oz BPA free cans in the USA. We prefer to source US cans rather than overseas cans. So our 13 oz cans are not BPA free but our 5.5 oz cat cans are BPA free.”

***After original response***

Thu, Aug 6, 2015 at 6:22 PM

“Dear April,

 Thank you for contacting EVO.

We are pleased to hear of your interest in our canned cat foods for your cats. Please find a response to your questions below.

Natura Pet the makers of EVO are owned by Mars Inc, a private family owned company.

All of Natura dry pet foods are manufactured at our own facility in Fremont, Nebraska and our canned foods are manufactured in Emporia, Kansas.

Natura Pet has received certifications from the following organizations:

         ISO Quality Management System 22000:2005 compliant – ISO 22000:2005 specifies rigorous standards for food safety management systems. EVO is the only pet food manufacturer in the United States to receive this superior distinction.

         American Institute of Baking(AIB) Superior rating certification – “…high AIB ratings confirm a manufacturer’s commitment to excellence,” — WDJ February, 2006.

         USDA APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) Registered – APHIS registry certifies that EVO purchases all of our meats from USDA registered suppliers who follow all USDA regulations for safe meat handling.

         ISO Quality Management System 9001:2000 compliant – An internationally recognized and highly respected system of quality management.

In addition to our accreditations, Natura employs our own standards of quality. Before any of our pet food is shipped, it must pass over 100 quality-control checks.

Natura’s goal remains to domestically source all ingredients. For many ingredients Natura does.

Unfortunately, after an exhaustive search, some ingredients simply cannot be sourced from within the U.S. as they just are not available.  For example, our venison is currently sourced from New Zealand. Many food safety precautions are in place due to concerns raised by the use of foreign ingredients.

Natura’s venison supplier is a global company that is committed to food safety and actually performs physical audits at the New Zealand manufacturer(s).

EVO uses only high-quality; natural ingredients to create foods that are denser and richer in essential nutrients. This means pets get more nutrition from less food, with calories and fats in each formula balanced to fit their specific needs. We will not add anything to the food unless it is nutritious and healthful for a cat or dog. All our foods are free from chemical additives of any kind, including preservatives such as ethoxyquin and BHA/BHT, which are frequently found in pet foods but are banned from human use in many countries.

For more information about where are ingredients are sourced please visit our website at http://www.evopet.com/see-beyond-the-bag.

Natura products are free of ingredients from China, with the exception of the dry foods that contain added L-carnitine, Taurine or Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).

All of our raw material suppliers are carefully audited and inspected and must meet our stringent supplier requirements before becoming an approved Natura supplier.  Before accepting any raw materials, we confirm that the shipment is from one of our approved Natura suppliers and that it also meets all specifications prior to accepting it into our inventory and using it in any of our foods or treats.

We support limiting the use of hormones and antibiotics in the raising of livestock.  We are committed to searching for supplies of meat that avoid residues of hormones and antibiotics.

Whenever possible Natura tries to avoid the use of GMO ingredients in our wholesome and natural foods. Therefore, we avoid the two most commonly used GMO carbohydrate sources used in pet foods today – corn and soy.

Our EVO Canned Cat Foods are available in 5.5 oz cans that are BPA free.

Our EVO 95% Chicken & Turkey canned cat food contains 10.58% protein as fed (71.45 g/1000 kcal).

If you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at your convenience.”

Taste of the Wild

TOW Customer Service Tuesday Aug 4, at 4:11PM

“Dear April,

Thank you for your interest in Taste of the Wild.

Taste of the Wild is a wholly-owned brand by Diamond Pet Foods and is manufactured in the U.S. in the Diamond Pet Foods state-of-the-art facilities. Two are located in California, one in Missouri and one in South Carolina.

We use some ingredients that are not USA sourced, lamb from New Zealand, lamb meal and venison from Australia, duck meal from France, potato protein from Germany and dried chicory root from Belgium.

All of our meats are purchased from food grade suppliers and are certified hormone and antibiotic free.  All of the fish that are used in our foods are low mercury species.

There are ingredients that are critical to our formulations (i.e. folic acid and taurine) that can only be sourced out of China.  Our choice is to either include these ingredients or manufacture our foods without them, which would not be in the best interest of your pet, in our view.

Some pet food companies are making “China-Free” claims despite the facts I’ve outlined above.  They accomplish this by utilizing a loophole in European law.  European laws allow for ingredients purchased outside their continent, then reprocessed in Europe, to be labeled with European origin.  We could likewise hide behind that loophole in the law, and tell you what you want to hear, but choose not to for obvious reasons.  I’d rather you not feed our foods than to tell you they are China-free, when they are not.

Our pet food company sources all protein meals (chicken meal, fish meal, etc) from vendors that do not use ethoxyquin.  As always, we do not use ethoxyquin in our manufacturing process to preserve the foods.

We are committed to product safety and quality, and adhere to stringent and scientifically advanced food safety protocols. We are constantly monitoring and testing our raw materials, production environment, processes and finished products. By continuously improving performance with the latest advancements in science and technology, we’ve developed a comprehensive food safety system.

Here are a few of the ways we ensure quality:

  • On-Site Product Testing
  • Mycotoxin Control
  • Microbial Testing
  • Water Purification
  • Air Quality Control
  • Test and Hold Program

Please visit our corporate website,  http://diamondpetcompany.com/#facilities/1 for a virtual tour of our state-of-the-art facilities to get an inside look at what it takes to create quality products.

The Rocky Mountain Feline and Canyon River Feline canned food both contain 8.9% protein based on an as fed basis of a typical analysis of the formula.

We strive to use GMO free ingredients as much as possible. However, there are certain ingredients that may contain traces of GMO. This is impossible to avoid given the way food sources are grown outdoors in open fields. Traces of GMO will even show up from the protein meals like Lamb, Chicken, Salmon, and Egg if those animals ate GMO ingredients prior to slaughter.

Organic foods for pets are considered by definition to be GMO free. These products are available in the marketplace. The prices are much higher due to the limited availability of the organic ingredients and regulations on organic foods.

All cans containing dog food diets do contain Bisphenol A (BPA) as part of the overall structure for the can. The BPA is required for these types of cans in order to protect the integrity of the can and provide shelf life to the food. The BPA is not in direct contact with the food itself.

The cans containing cat food diets do not contain BPA as part of the overall structure for the can because these types of cans are made from a different type of material (e.g. aluminum). “

“1.        Who is/are the company owners, and where are they based?

Solid Gold Pet is owned by a small group of people, including Sissy McGill, our founder. Our corporate office is located in Greenville, South Carolina.

  1. What is the name of the facility/facilities where your products manufactured?  Also the location(s)? All our dry cat foods are made at Crosswind Pet Foods in Kansas. Our July Morning canned cat food is made at Simmons Pet Foods in New Jersey. Our five tuna blend canned cat foods are made in a tuna cannery in Thailand.
  2. What Certifications do the manufacturing facilities hold?

Our dry food manufacturing facility is certified via GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative). The canneries are certified via GFSI but they also have to comply with FDA regulations on thermal processing, which are a very elaborate and detailed requirements. A thermal process authority has to be approved and then the FDA has to approve the process themselves and the FDA performs audits on canneries

  1. Where are your products sourced from?  Main ingredients as well as the supplements please?  Is your Vitamin C and Taurine sourced from China?

Solid Gold is 100% Chinese ingredient free in all our products. Most of our ingredients for foods produced in the US are sources in the US and Canada. We source some key proteins from France (duck, quail, rabbit) and New Zealand (lamb meal). The taurine we use is from Japan.

  1. Are your meats hormone and antibiotic free?

Not all of them. Some of the meats we use, such as buffalo, venison, duck, rabbit, quail are hormone and antibiotic free. All poultry in the US is hormone free but antibiotic free poultry can be very difficult to source all the time.

  1. Can you please tell me what is the “as fed” % of protein for your canned chicken formula cat food.

July Morning contains 10% protein (as fed)

  1. Are your products certified GMO free?

No

Are any of your cans BPA free?

July Morning is BPA free. We are in the process of transitioning the tuna canned foods to BPA free cans.”

Please note: This article has been provided for informational purposes only. If your pet is showing any signs of illness, please consult a veterinarian as quickly as possible. A raw food diet may not be appropriate for all cats in all stages of health and we always recommend having your cat examined and discussing diet changes with your veterinarian.
