Ditch the Dry Cat Food: Why it is the WORST choice for your Bambino or Sphynx Cats Health!
Hello again everyone. First of all thank you for visiting my blog page. I am excited for this weeks post because it is something I am VERY passionate about. I have been trying diligently for years to educate people on why to ditch the dry cat food, dry food is the worst choice of food for our precious babies. Last week I asked you if you have ever thought about how dry cat or dog food can sit in a bag on a shelf and not spoil? Maybe you never thought much about it or maybe you did… but today we will get to the answer.
The main ingredient in any cat food as we learned last week should be meat for protein. However sadly, many dry cat food brands fail at even this simplest most crucial fact; with ground corn or gluten corn meal as the most abundant ingredient! On top of that the sources of this “meat” is enough to turn even the toughest of stomachs. To help illustrate I would like you to look at an example. My example is Iams Original dry cat food; one of the largest and most profitable pet food companies which is owned by P&G along with what like 90 other companies… but that is a whole other issue. Here are the ingredients list for the Iams dry cat food:
Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Grits, Corn Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Tuna, Brewers Rice, Dried Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Sodium Bisulfate, Potassium Chloride, Fructooligosaccharides, Choline Chloride, DL-Methionine, Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Calcium Carbonate, Taurine, Minerals (Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract
The first ingredient we see is Chicken-By-Product Meal. Ever wondered what that means? Well ready or not I am going to explain. The by-products of a chicken is any part of the animal which is deemed unfit for human consumption. This includes the feet, beak, head including eyeballs, brain, blood, intestines, and spine which have been stripped clean of all usable meat for humans. Sounds appetizing huh! Now besides that all sounding disgusting, the most important fact to look at is there is very little nutritional value in any of those chicken by products. Let me just tell you too this applies to anytime you see by-products on a label whether is be chicken, beef, turkey, pork.. it is all of the animals “parts” not meat. Some dry cat foods do contain actual meat from the animals, but this still ultimately is not much better due to the processing procedures.
All of these “parts” are then thrown into a giant vat and boiled for several hours at a very high temperature until it is “rendered,” meaning that all of the fat and water is extracted and any bacteria, viruses, parasites and other organisms are killed, So that might sound like a good thing right? However these high temperatures also destroy natural enzymes and proteins crucial to our cats health. Next this rendered product is mixed with the starch product, in this case it is corn grits and corn meal, and brewers rice; and once again when would a wild cat ever go munching on an ear of corn?
This mixture is then fed through a machine called an extruder. The extruder blends everything into a dough and then feeds it through the screws of the machine where the “food” is subjected to steam and high pressure which forms the shape of the dry food. The food is then left setting in heat to finish drying. Sounds delicious huh? But wait there is more! Now this boiled, blended dried hard food would be completely undesirable to our finicky felines, and EVEN their canine rivals because there is no flavor. So what to the pet food companies do… the now spray the dry food with that same fat that was boiled out previously so our pets will actually eat it.
Along with this animal fat they mix in multiple vitamins and additional additives for flavor. It may seem like a good thing that they are adding all of these vitamins for our beloved kitties, however the truth is if the food was of good fresh quality these vitamins would not HAVE to be added. But especially in the case of these highly processed dry foods the vitamins have to be added because they would contain essentially NO nutritional benefit because any vitamins and minerals which were in those chicken by products have been destroyed by the processing.
Now come the preservatives… this is how this dry food can sit on a shelf in your pet food store for up to a year in most cases without spoiling. Many different preservative are used and none of them are good for your cat. In this case Iams has used Sodium Bisulfate, a salt compound, Potassium Chloride, another salt compound, Fructooligosaccharides, which is high-fructose corn syrup an artificial sweetener, and Choline Chloride, which is yet another salt compound. These preservatives are all proven to cause an array of health problems over time including, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even cancer.
I hope this has enlightened you and you go to your pantry right now and throw out that artificial food you have been feeding your cat!!! Now I know one major question that may be on your mind, because I hear this all of the time when I discuss the poor diet choice of dry food is; don’t they need dry food for their teeth? The answer is absolutely NO! Check back in next week and I will explain why.
Please note: This article has been provided for informational purposes only. If your pet is showing any signs of illness, please consult a veterinarian as quickly as possible. A raw food diet may not be appropriate for all cats in all stages of health and we always recommend having your cat examined and discussing diet changes with your veterinarian.
Keep those Hairless Kitties Healthy and Happy Everyone!!!
